Francis was a young nobleman at the court of the King of Spain. He became a Duke when he was only thirty-three and lived a happy, peaceful life with his wife Eleanor and their eight children. But unlike so many other powerful nobles, Francis was a perfect Christian gentleman, a true man of God and his great joy was to receive Holy Communion often. This happy life ended when his beloved wife died. Francis did something that astonished all the nobles of Spain; he gave up his Dukedom to his son Charles and became a Jesuit priest. So many people came to his first Mass that they had to set up an altar outdoors, but his Superior tested him by treating him in exactly the opposite way he had been used to all his forty-one years of life. He who had once been a Duke had to help the cook, carrying wood for the fire and sweeping the kitchen.

Priest-abuse files shed light on how diocese worked

The release of thousands of pages of previously confidential files on San Diego Roman Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse is a landmark development in the abuse scandal, lawyers and advocates for victims said Monday. The approximately 10, pages of documents made available over the weekend extend back more than a half century and constitute what one expert called the most significant cache of clergy abuse files that has been released since And more could be on the way, say lawyers for the people who sued the diocese over claims they were molested as children.

The diocese is claiming some 2, more pages of documents relating to the priests should remain private, but the final decision will be made by a retired San Diego Superior Court judge who has been charged with deciding what documents should be made public.

Previous Next Jewish Cemetery in what is now Dolores Park Before the City of San Francisco voted to stop burials within city limits in , there were at least 30 cemeteries currently in use or abandoned with bodies around San Francisco. Most of the deceased non-native residents previously buried in SF were moved to cemeteries in Colma in s, a city which now carries the distinction of having more dead residents two million and counting than living 1, Unfortunately for anyone trying to find burial records, this migration from SF to Colma during the turn of the century was spotty.

Sometimes bodies were exumed and buried in mass graves, other times they were transferred to new coffins with incorrect information, and once in a while bodies that were supposed to get moved didn’t, and have been hiding out in their original resting place all along. So where were these SF cemeteries and what’s there now you ask?

We investigate… The Big Four Image by: Following the Victorian sentiments of park-like cemeteries located far from the city, these cemeteries were built on luscious grounds with winding roads and beautiful paths. But by the early s the lots were full and grounds left to disrepair. In Inner Richmond property owners began their campaign to close the cemeteries completely to help boost property value, and after litigation, ballots, voting and more bureaucracy, the process of moving previously buried bodies from the Big Four cemeteries to Colma land began in The entire removal process took until after WWII, and tragically almost none of the elaborate Neoclassical monuments in the Big Four survived.

My brothers and sisters in Christ: I am writing to the entire Catholic community of San Diego and Imperial Counties this week to speak about the unspeakable — the sexual abuse of minors by priests which was detailed in the report of the grand jury in Pennsylvania. The individual stories of abuse that robbed the souls and violated the bodies of so many innocent children and young people during the past seventy years are shattering. For me as a bishop there is an additional level of shame, because in many instances, this abuse was magnified by the leadership of the Church that placed fear of scandal and the culture of clericalism ahead of the protection of young people.

The Pennsylvania grand jury report demands action and also points the way toward reform in the life of our Church. That report reveals that the imposition of the zero tolerance policy in substantially worked. It ushered in a period in which sexual abuse of minors by priests fell dramatically through consistent reporting to civil authorities, the creation of lay boards to evaluate the truth of allegations, and the education of children about abuse.

The additional reforms that we must undertake at this moment must be based on the principles that produced positive change after — an unswerving focus on protecting minors and vulnerable adults and a binding voice for the laity in determining whether an allegation is true. Any genuine reform must forcefully integrate these principles in a framework of accountability that applies to bishops in their personal lives and administrative actions.

I have already begun a process of consultation with priestly and lay leadership in the diocese of San Diego focusing on the steps we need to take locally and nationally to accomplish genuine reform. During the month of October, I will hold eight town hall meetings throughout the diocese. I invite you to be part of this effort by your presence or your prayers.
