Like the majority of painters of the late nineteenth century, Homer never spoke directly about photography, nor did he ever exhibit such images in any formal manner. As one attuned to appearances and constantly experimenting with how to represent them, Homer understood that photography as a new technology of sight had much to reveal. Though he privileged his own vision and saw painting as the most compelling means to figure the world, he grew to learn that photography—despite its limitations and problematic reputation in the world of the fine arts—was a medium that did not undermine, but instead complemented his larger artistic interests.
But a little-studied set of photographs of the waxes that were taken just a few short months after Degas died offers us a richer and clearer understanding of his sculptural practice and sheds crucial light on certain important but overlooked transformations that these works underwent before they were cast.
My paper will thus use these photographs as case studies for exploring the fascinating relationship between photography and sculpture, the important place of archival photographs in the history of art, and the power of archival photographs to help us discover the material transformations that countless art works undergo over the course of the lives. The utopian dreamscape that is created investigates issues of narcissism and otherness, female homosexuality, dandyism and going beyond the gender binary, individual and social critique, mocks the antiquated views of art and writing, accepting and breaking of taboos, all while allowing for other departures from the accepted norm.

Kodak manufacturer records and sample books include details about Kodak paper surface characteristics, and are an invaluable resource for understanding photographic paper materials.
I have created a guide that will provide an organized understanding of the information included in the data books and manuals in order to better understand Kodak fiber-based paper surface characteristics for researchers and conservators. Using the extensive number of Kodak data books, manuals, and manufacturing records spread out in the collections of The George Eastman Museum, The University of Rochester Special Collections, and The Image Permanence Institute, I created a chronological guide to Kodak photographic paper surface characteristics.
This guide is not an approximate identification guide for Kodak papers, but a resource that can be used to fill in gaps and propose questions about Kodak manufacturing history that is no longer easily accessible. This project will help researchers, photography archivists, conservators, or anyone else interested in Kodak history, gain access to a better understanding of photographic paper produced by Kodak from The practice of photography changed dramatically since the democratization of photography linked to the invention of the Kodak No.

Benin[ edit ] Palm is native to the wetlands of western Africa, and south Benin already hosts many palm plantations. Its ‘Agricultural Revival Programme’ has identified many thousands of hectares of land as suitable for new oil palm export plantations. In spite of the economic benefits, Non-governmental organisations NGOs , such as Nature Tropicale , claim biofuels will compete with domestic food production in some existing prime agricultural sites. Other areas comprise peat land , whose drainage would have a deleterious environmental impact.
They are also concerned genetically modified plants will be introduced into the region, jeopardizing the current premium paid for their non-GM crops. Before the project was halted, Herakles left the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil early in negotiations.

A year-old blew himself up in the offices of the FSB security agency on Wednesday injuring three members of the force and sparking a terrorism investigation. Student Mikhail Zhlobitsky allegedly used a pseudonym to post a warning about the attack on an online anarchist forum on the Telegram messaging application seven minutes before it happened. He also used the name Sergei Nechayev — after a 19th-century Russian revolutionary who advocated violence in the name of socialism — on the social media platform VKontakte.

Piano music was played instead. A weekly Children’s Newsreel was inaugurated on 23 April , to around , receivers. It was revealed that this had been due to producers fearing a newsreader with visible facial movements would distract the viewer from the story. It was from here that the first Panorama , a new documentary programme, was transmitted on 11 November , with Richard Dimbleby becoming anchor in On 28 October , the Today programme , a morning radio programme, was launched in central London on the Home Service.
He set up a BBC study group whose findings, published in , were critical of what the television news operation had become under his predecessor, Tahu Hole. The report proposed that the head of television news should take control away from radio , and that the television service should have a proper newsroom of its own, with an editor-of-the-day. A newsroom was created at Alexandra Palace, television reporters were recruited and given the opportunity to write and voice their own scripts—without the “impossible burden” of having to cover stories for radio too.
The World at One , a lunchtime news programme, began on 4 October on the then Home Service, and the year before News Review had started on television. News Review was a summary of the week’s news, first broadcast on Sunday, 26 April on BBC 2 and harking back to the weekly Newsreel Review of the Week, produced from , to open programming on Sunday evenings—the difference being that this incarnation had subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
As this was the decade before electronic caption generation, each superimposition “super” had to be produced on paper or card, synchronised manually to studio and news footage , committed to tape during the afternoon, and broadcast early evening. Thus Sundays were no longer a quiet day for news at Alexandra Palace. News Review and Westminster the latter a weekly review of Parliamentary happenings were “colourised” shortly after. However, much of the insert material was still in black and white, as initially only a part of the film coverage shot in and around London was on colour reversal film stock , and all regional and many international contributions were still in black and white.

Lucas W Hixson 2 Comments Share: Panorama, the BBC investigative journalism program, released a new documentary this week on the Sellafield nuclear power plant formerly called Windscale in England warning that areas of the complex are dangerously rundown. Sellafield is home to four decommissioned nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities, and vast amounts of nuclear waste. Many of the facilities were constructed with sole consideration given to the technical challenges faced by designers, with no thought given to how they would ultimately be decommissioned.
The BBC investigation highlights safety problem after safety problem, but largely centers around claims of dangerous handling of radioactive materials, the aging and degradation of critical safety equipment, and inadequate staffing levels. The BBC documentary investigation was initiated after testimony of a whistleblower who used to be a senior manager of the Sellafield facility. One of the greatest concerns listed by the whistleblower is that if a critical fire were to break out and reach the silos of nuclear waste stored on-site that it could generate a plume of radioactive materials that would be spread across Western Europe.
Some of these silos contain pyrophoric will ignite if exposed to air and highly radioactive nuclear wastes including cladding and fuel elements. The whistleblower featured in the BBC documentary says that many of the problems it identified over the course of its investigation were indeed simple and not very complex, like staffing issues. In the one year span between July and July , there were 97 recorded incidents where some facilities at the side did not have adequate minimum staffing levels on shift.
Staffing levels are one of the key performance indicators for Sellafield and any deviation from safe minimum staffing levels is not acceptable according to Sellafield documents. BBC was able to acquire a report from which documents in photographs how physically rundown and degraded certain areas of the plant have become.
Documents clearly illustrated how years of neglect ultimately lead to intolerable conditions in some areas of the site.
